FIB1-1000TG and FIB1-1000TS compatibility issue with L2 switches |
|
The FIB1-1000TG and FIB1-1000TS are a transparent (T) fiber media converter for 1000Base-T to 1000Base-SX/LX that utilizes GBIC (G) or SFP (S) modules. Because these converters works transparently, they can only support 1000Base on the UTP side. The converters can be used to transport any packet (frame) size without limitation and have extremely low latency. The FIB1-1000TG may only connect its fiber to a switch in forced mode only; The FIB1-1000TG has no provision for setting the fiber to auto mode. Unlike the TG, the FIB1-1000TS added support for fiber auto-negotiation which makes it easier to connect to L2 switches such as Cisco Catalyst series. Problem: When connected to a Layer 2 switch that has auto-negotiation enabled, the switch will fail to link properly. Solution: Configure the fiber port on the switch which connects to the FIB1-1000TG to forced mode. This should result in a good link status and normal performance on the link. If the L2 switch does not support configuring its port to forced mode, either use a different L2 switch which does support configuration, or use the FIB1-1000TS media converter. The FIB1-1000TS adds support for either forced or auto mode by way of a front panel DIP switch setting. The default setting should be for auto mode and should have no problem linking to typical L2 switches. Unlike the 'T' series transparent converters, the FIB1-1000ES uses Ethernet switch technology, supports 10/100/1000 speed on the copper with Full, Half or Auto negotiation. However, the maximum frame size with the FIB1-1000ES is limited to 1632 Bytes. Updated: Sep. 26, 2007
